Sabahans advised to be positive about migration

Kota Kinabalu: Job seekers in Sabah are advised not to be afraid of migrating to other places.

State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said such trend “takes place in every country in the world.”

“Sometimes, success can only be found elsewhere and not at home…and this spirit (of seeking success) should be in the hearts of all Sabahans.

“Yes, you can go abroad to succeed and come back to help the State,” he said after attending the Sabah and Labuan Zone National Dual Training System (NDTS) Convocation, here, on Saturday.

Asked whether it will cause brain drain to the State, Masidi said, he is “looking at it on the positive side.”

“The Americans, for example, despite the fact that the US is one of the strongest economies in the world, there are still Americans who migrated for various reasons.

“Another example is Norway where it is one of the richest countries in the world, but their problem is they do not have enough people.

“Firstly, they just want a better life for themselves and their family…and they feel that they cannot find that here.

“Secondly, there are other factors like social and political, among others. But then again, if you look at those who migrated, many said they still want to come back to Malaysia if they have a choice.

“I look at it quite positively. I do not see it in a negative way.

“However, this is something that is very subjective – what is good for me may not be good for others, and vice versa,” he said.
