MMEA detains eight illegal immigrants in Tawau

TAWAU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained eight illegal immigrants believed to be harvesting seaweed in the waters of Sebatik Island, here, Thursday.

Tawau MMEA director Capt Shahrizan Raman said all the male suspects are believed to be Indonesians aged between 18 and 41.

He said the suspects were arrested during an operation conducted by the MMEA.

“They were detained and taken to the Tawau Jetty MMEA for further investigation under the Immigration Act 1959/63 as they did not have valid travel documents,” he said.

Boats, boat engines, and personal belongings were also confiscated, with a total seizure value estimated at over RM50,000.
