KOTA KINABALU : A Sabah company plans to invest up to RM270 million in Lahad Datu to treat scheduled wastes.

Legenda Bumimas (Lahad Datu) Sdn Bhd concluded an agreement with State-owned POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd to acquire 12.83 acres at the latter’s POIC Lahad Datu industrial park to site its investment.

Industrial wastes and their disposal are governed by numerous laws in Malaysia.

But as Sabah develops and waste production increases, tight enforcement is needed to ensure public good.

Legenda Bumimas’s investment is expected to have sizable impact on proper industrial waste disposal regimen particularly along Sabah’s east coast economic centres such as Lahad Datu.

POIC Lahad Datu industrial park is home to a wide range of industrial activities. The Lahad Datu district is home to a majority of the 130-plus oil palm mills, a dozen oil palm refineries and palm kernel crushing plants which use varying degrees of scheduled substances in their processes.

“We welcome Legenda Bumimas’s investment which, like utilities and infrastructure, add to factors that attract investors to POIC Lahad Datu.

“We hope that this investment will spur interests in the circular economy and strengthen the belief in sustainability,” said POIC Sabah group CEO Datuk Fredian Gan at the signing ceremony at POIC Sabah’s office in Kota Kinabalu. He signed the sales agreement on behalf of POIC Sabah.

Tan Pek Chian, managing director of Legenda Bumimas (Lahad Datu) Sdn Bhd said the company will be developing an enhanced version of their facility in the west coast of Sabah located in Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP).

“Moving forward, Legenda will continue its growth, transformation and innovations by focusing on future investment into advanced technologies and automation equipment in efficient waste management, treatment, recycling and recovery process to reduce carbon footprint, increase carbon credit, combat climate change in line with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG),” Tan said.

Witnessing the signing ceremony were POIC chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Yong Teck Lee and representative from the Ministry of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Sabah.

Also present on behalf of Legenda Bumimas were managing director Tan Pek Chian and Dr Foo Ming Hui, Director, Environmental, Safety & Health Manager.
