KOTA KINABALU: State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said personal integrity is the key factor differentiating an effective organisation from a failing one.
“It is not just a value; it defines the strength of leadership and the trustworthiness of our institutions.
While speaking at the 2024 Integrity, Governance, and Anti-Corruption Convention (KITA), Masidi warned against indecision and the fear of confronting wrongdoings, pointing out that a lack of courage in addressing unethical behaviour leads to organisational collapse.
“We must have the courage to make the right decisions, even if they are difficult and unpopular, and not be afraid to challenge our superiors if it is in the best interest of the people and the government,” he urged.
Masidi highlighted the visible results of integrity-driven leadership, noting that Sabah had achieved its highest revenue collection and financial reserves in recent years.
“These successes are not accidental, they are the outcome of strong governance, strict financial oversight, and the commitment to doing what is right, not what is popular,” he said.
He further emphasised the importance of professional governance in state-owned enterprises, favouring more experts and professionals to lead Government-Linked Companies (GLCs), ensuring these institutions are led with the same level of accountability and expertise expected in the private sector.
Masidi praised the ongoing efforts to modernise and digitalise government processes as a method of combating corruption and improving efficiency.
“Digitalisation is not just about streamlining services – it is a critical tool for transparency and reducing opportunities for misuse of funds,” he said.
Masidi noted the need for continuous integrity training, urging regular courses for civil servants to reinforce ethical practices in daily operations, adding that without personal integrity among employees, even the best policies and frameworks would fail to achieve their goals.
He said the importance of humility and self-awareness, warning against comparing oneself with the wrong audience and believing in one’s superiority.
“Our people’s and government’s future is more important than our personal ambitions. We must prioritise honour and integrity above all else,” he said.
According to Masidi, the State Ministry of Finance had been recognised by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) – alongside three other agencies – for its commitment of improving governance, receiving an award at the previous year’s convention.
“This recognition is a testament to our relentless efforts to strengthen governance and build a future based on integrity,” he said.
