This in view of the existing market’s condition which is unsafe to use and unable to be repaired due to its structural damage. “While identifying a new location, the Council will continue the renovation works on the existing Karamunting Market,” Isnin said during question time at the State Legislative Assembly sitting.

He added that the alternative sites are being identified together with the Land Revenue Collector’s Office (PPHT).He was responding to Karamunting Assemblyman Hiew Vun Zin who asked if the Ministry has conducted a feasibility study to build a new Karamunting market on an alternative site.

On how much the construction of the new market would cost, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said: “I cannot say how much this market would cost as the site has not been identified yet”.

In another development, Local Government and Housing Assistant Minister II Mohamad Hamsan Awang Supain said the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) is currently repairing damaged underground cables that have caused street lights in several places to malfunction.

“Based on the Council’s records, street lights in Sri Tanjong are working well except those in Jalan Kuhara, Sin On Tiku, Jalan Masjid, Jalan Dominik and Jalan Timur that have damaged underground cables,” he said.

He was responding to Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong who asked about the number of street lights in Sri Tanjong and how many of them were functioning. Hamsan said there are 3,376 street lights in Sri Tanjong that are maintained by the MPT.

Additionally, Justin pointed out that there was difficulty contacting concessionaires responsible for repairing and maintaining the street lights and asked if the Ministry would do something about the inefficient responsiveness.

In response, Masidi said Justin could personally contact him on the matter and liaise for action to be taken or for the matter to be investigated.
