KOTA KINABALU: Women play an essential role in contributing to the economic prosperity of the State, regardless of the sectors, said Sabah Institute for Development Studies (IDS) chairperson Datuk Seri Azizah Mohd Dun.

“They should be given the same opportunities as men for development and empowerment,” she said in a statement, Saturday.

“In many areas, women face obstacles that hinder their career progression, resulting in a disproportionate number of men occupying top positions.

“Collaborative effort will not only shed light on the root causes of the issue but also guide the committee in crafting effective solutions that will empower women to take their rightful place in shaping the future of the State.”

Azizah said this after the formation of the Women’s Leadership Initiative Committee (WLIC) here recently.

With the mission to raise visibility of women in the State, the committee chaired by Azizah, comprises members from diverse background and expertise.

The committee’s main objective is to be the monitoring mechanism for women’s initiatives through comprehensive research focusing on few indicators of women’s participation in various sectors.

The committee will also focus on assessing the impact of all policies and programs designed and deployed for women, both at the state and national levels.

The committee will advocate changes in women’s representation in Sabah through carefully formulated programmes.
