Equality no longer enough for women, says Jannie

A good effort should start with small awareness but can have a big impact in the future,” Jannie said

Kota Kinabalu: This year’s International Women’s Day celebration with the theme “Embrace Equity” is important for all to understand and practice in order to achieve change and improve the status of women, said Kapayan assemblywoman Jannie Lasimbang.

She said this requires all quarters to be fair, accepting different perspectives and experiences in order to achieve mutual success.

“The celebration of Women’s Day is important because the contributions of women in terms of time, attention, care, sacrifice and effort in all fields whether in work, family, politics and so on – from small things to the big – should be appreciated and celebrated.

“Equality where women are given the same resources or opportunities, is no longer enough.

“We need to appreciate the meaning of equity because women have different circumstances and need to be allocated the right resources and opportunities needed to achieve the desired results,” Jannie said in a statement here on Wednesday.

In conjunction with the International Women’s Day, she said it is hoped that the draft Gender Inclusion Policy will be approved for use by the Sabah government to help balance and improve the development of Sabah women in the future. In addition, she said the ‘Underage Marriage Law’ is also one of the efforts that all communities in Sabah need to pay attention to.

“It is my hope that this law amendment can be approved this year to help reduce early marriages among our community.

“A good effort should start with small awareness but can have a big impact in the future,” Jannie said.

Last year, she said they have seen thousands of people around the world send images showing their support and solidarity for the International Women’s Day campaign theme #BreakTheBias helping to drive positive change.

“Let us forge incredible unity and support around the world once again for 2023 today. Let’s all step forward and commit to #EmbraceEquity,” she said.
