Wildlife attacks: Authorities urged to act

Mizma made the call in the wake of another crocodile attack here, which resulted in a one-year-old boy going missing and his father injured seriously.

LAHAD DATU: The authorities are urged to take proactive measures to deal with the increasing number of attacks on humans by wild animals such as elephants and crocodiles in the district.

Segama Community Development Leader Mizma Appehdullah said the issue should not be taken lightly as it involved injuries and deaths.

“Proactive measures need to be taken immediately to address the problem. Incidents of crocodile attack or elephant invasion in the district are not new and there is no solution till now,” she said.

Mizma made the call in the wake of another crocodile attack here, which resulted in a one-year-old boy going missing and his father injured seriously.

She also voiced concerns over the presence of elephants that often destroyed plantations and houses of residents.

“The presence of elephants on major roads that are often used by people is also worrying because it could cause accidents like the one that happened last Saturday at Km 13 of Jalan Lahad Datu-Sandakan, which resulted in the death of a baby elephant,” she said.

Expressing sadness over the incidents, Mizma reminded the community, especially those who live near a river or the sea, to be always vigilant so as not to become victims of crocodile attacks.

She also advised the people not to act on their own against invading or marauding elephants but to contact the authorities so that appropriate action can be taken.
